In order to accomplish the actualization of a paper I presented in Federal Polytechnic Idah 4th Engineering Conference in 2017, I embarked on the design and construction of agricultural drip irrigation system using microcontroller.
The design make use of soil water level sensors to determine the amount of water in the soil, and thus determine whether to pump water (irrigate) into the soil or not. When the soil water level fails below 20%, the system automatically start the pump attached to it which in turn pumps water from the reservoir tank into the soil and stop pumping when the water in the soil is sufficient enough, preventing water logging in the farm, which could lead to other farm diseases.
The system used two tanks, in which one is the reservoir tank, in real life, the overhead tank while the other is the underground water reservoir.
The unit has water level sensor, thus pumps water from the underground reservoir to the overhead tank when water in the overhead tank had gone below 10% of the tank capacity and to prevent water overflow, stops the pumping when the tank had full to brim.
